Course Description:
All USGS personnel must attend an 8-hour USGS Firearms Refresher course every year they intend to use a firearm, after having completed the USGS 24-hour Basic, Firearms Safety course. The 8-hour refresher course focuses on the use of handguns, rifles, and shotguns against potentially dangerous wild animals and emphasizes firearms safety and safe and effective firearms handling. Participants will review safe firearm manipulation, regulations governing firearms use and transportation, mental conditioning for personal defense and studies of wild animal/human encounters will be revisited as a basis for understanding how to avoid dangerous encounters. Each student must shoot a minimum 70% score on a static target in a timed test in order to qualify with the firearm type she/he chooses to carry in the field and pass a written exam.
