Course Description:
An extensive effort has been made during the past 3 years to efficiently integrate the USGS three-dimensional ground-water flow model (MODFLOW) with the USGS Precipitation-Runoff Modeling System (PRMS) and to couple the simulation of streams and lakes with both MODFLOW and PRMS. Version 1.0 of the coupled ground-water/surface-water flow model is now complete and is named GSFLOW. The purpose for development of GSFLOW was to provide a model that can be used to solve complex problems related to ground-water interactions with surface water affected by changing land-use and water-use practices and climate. GSFLOW simulates flow in three coupled regions: the first includes the plant canopy, land surface, and soil zone; the second includes unsaturated and saturated subsurface zones beneath the soil zone; and the third includes surface-water bodies such as streams and lakes. The integration of the PRMS and MODFLOW codes required the development of an unsaturated-zone flow package for MODFLOW (the Unsaturated-Zone Flow Package), which was connected with a new soil-zone module in PRMS. The link is sufficiently flexible to all Hydrologic Response Units used in PRMS to coincied with or be different from a MODFLOW grid. This 5-day course presents the design, theory, and use of GSFLOW to evaluate combined surface-water and ground-water resources of a watershed or basin. THE REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS APRIL 13, 2007. Registration should be completed in DOI LEARN. If you have DOI LEARN questions, please contact Leigh Healy at lhealy@usgs.gov for assistance.
Course Title:
Coupled Ground-Water/Surface-Water Modeling using GSFLOW
Attendees:
Enrollment is limited to US Geological Survey staff. The GSFLOW model combines watershed (PRMS) and ground-water (MODFLOW) modeling. Consequently, it is anticipated that in some cases, Water Science Centers will want to enroll a team of two experienced modelers for the class - - one with a background in watershed modeling using PRMS (or a similar watershed-modeling code), and one with a background in ground-water modeling using MODFLOW. Class participation is limited to 24 students. Selection of class participants will be made in consultation with the Regional Ground-Water and Surface-Water Specialist to ensure a balance of participants from across the Eastern, Central, and Western Regions.
Course Discipline:
Interdisciplinary Courses in Hydrology
Prerequisites:
Experience with MODFLOW and (or) PRMS (or a similar watershed model).
