MEMORANDUM

December 22, 2005

To: Science Center Directors
From: Pam Malam (signed)
  Associate Director for Human Capital
Subject: Career Transition Workshops

In November, the USGS announced the implementation of a Career Transition and Employee Services website (http://internal.usgs.gov/ops/hro/career/index.html) as part of an overall initiative to assist employees with managing career transition. I am pleased to announce plans for additional career transition services in the form of workshops for employees. The content of the workshops has been adapted to meet specific USGS needs. They are being conducted by Vantage Human Resource Services, Inc., a highly respected company that has provided employee services to the public and private sectors, including 40 Federal Government agencies and over 100,000 federal employees nationwide, for nearly 30 years.

Beginning in January 2006, the first offerings of these Career Transition Workshops will be held in Menlo Park, CA; Lakewood, CO; Reston, VA; and Rolla, MO. These locations were selected based on the large population of USGS employees at these sights who are facing potential career transition due to organizational changes. These workshops are funded through a combination of Human Resources Initiative and other program funds. Additional workshops will be offered in other locations based on priority needs and availability of funding.

Please see http://training.usgs.gov/CareerTrans/Schedule.html for scheduled workshop dates, times, and locations.

The USGS recognizes the importance of providing employees with the information and support they need when facing potential career changes stemming from organizational or personal changes. These workshops will provide participants with proven career transition strategies that can be immediately put to use. Participants will leave with a complete understanding of what is takes to make a successful career transition.

The Office of Organizational and Employee Development (OED) and the Human Resource Offices will work with you to coordinate and provide additional workshops to your employees, if you desire. Questions regarding the Career Transition Workshops should be addressed to Pam Marsters, OED Lead Employee Development Liaison, at pmarster@usgs.gov or (703) 648-6703. Additional information with specifics about the workshop schedules, locations, and registration will be provided in the near future via the Career Transitions website at: http://internal.usgs.gov/ops/hro/career/index.html.
